The Highland Community College-Illinois volleyball team battled Schoolcraft College to five sets on Aug. 21 before falling 3-2, 15-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Highland got off to a strong start, dominating the opening set 25-15. The Cougars carried that momentum into the third set, winning 25-19 after Schoolcraft evened the match with a 25-22 second-set victory.
With the match tied at two sets apiece, Schoolcraft pulled away late in the fifth set to earn the 15-10 win and take the match 3-2.
Cailyn Lane led Highland with 15 kills, while Emily Quine added 11 kills and Olivia Klinefelter finished with seven. Izabella Homewood recorded six kills, and Jocelyn Hall contributed five.
Quine also turned in a strong all-around performance, adding eight blocks and six digs. Emily Broshous led the defensive effort with 17 digs, while Lana Walker recorded eight digs and Kallie Yianibas added 10.
Highland finished with 49 kills and 45 assists while recording nine service aces. The Cougars also totaled 59 digs and nine blocks in the five-set battle.
Despite the loss, Highland showed plenty of fight, winning two sets and pushing Schoolcraft to the deciding fifth set before falling just short.
